Mitchell Street Central Hermanus,
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
COMPLETION DATE: January 2011
CLIENT: Overstrand Municipality
CTS and Urban Dynamics conducted a high-level contextual overview and assessed the central Hermanus area to initiate an urban design and development concept for the area. Work included a review and a synthesis of the existing urban design developments and planning processes, a high-level contextual overview of central Hermanus, an assessment of the urban design informants, and the preparation of an urban design framework and development concept for the Mitchell Street Precinct.
The development concept identified a parking lot in the heart of Hermanus as a significant area of focus and a catalyst for regeneration of the area. The existing car park is re-imagined as a lively public space onto which new and existing development faces. Heritage concerns are addressed through the concept, in accordance with heritage assessments by heritage consultants, Sarah Winter and Nicolas Bowman.
